“Vermont agriculture is dependent on roughly 1,200-1,500 migrant farmworkers. The majority of Vermonters are not aware of the extent and scope of migrant farmworkers contributions to the sustainability of Vermont farms, food systems and landscapes nor of the difficult conditions under which they make these contributions”

Brendan O’Neil (see bio below) of the VT MFSP will be with us for questions and good conversation.

Brendan O’Neill was a campaign coordinator for Action for Community and Ecology in the Regions of Central America (ACERCA), from 2001-2004, where he organized international campaigns to challenge free trade agreements social, economic and ecological impacts on indigenous communities throughout Mexico and Central America. At ACERCA he conducted cross-border organizing, popular education, media and non-violent direct action trainings at national and international global justice and human rights conferences. He also taught in the Latin American Studies program at Plattsburgh State and the Inter-American Studies program at Burlington College (2004-2007) focusing on the social and environmental impacts of economic globalization. Brendan has collaborated with various local, state-wide, national and international organizations to strengthen worker and immigrant rights movements. Since 2007 Brendan has collaborated with Vermont’s migrant farmworker communities designing a popular education curriculum as an English as a Second Language Teacher and co-founding the VT Migrant Farmworker Solidarity Project.

May 12 - “Cultural Diversity Series”: Congolese in Vermont


May 12 , 2010, 4:00-5:30 pm

In collaboration with the Fletcher Free Library and support from the Mercy Peace Initiative Small Grants Program, the Diversity & Equity Office presented its next installment of the Cultural Diversity Series, a collection of educational presentations from our culturally rich community. On May 12, 2010, the topic will be “Congolese in VT: Historical, Cultural Background, Education & Other Experiences,” led by Jeanine Bunzigiye, our very own Bilingual/Bicultural Home School Liaison.

There will be homemade snacks, time for questions, and great conversation after. We look forward to seeing you!

Somali Bantu presentation

On November 19, 2009, Abdullahi Hassan, Hassan Kulow, and Mohammed Abdi, Bilingual/Bicultural Home School Liaisons from the Burlington School District presented “Somali Bantu in Vermont: Their Historical and Cultural Background, Education and Other Experiences.”

Bhutanese presentation

On October 14th, Madhu Neupone, Burlington School District Home School Liaison, explored the historical and cultural background, education, and other experiences of the Bhutanese experience in Burlington. This event kicked off the 2009-2010 cultural diversity series in partnership with the Fletcher Free Library.
