Help Us Recruit Teacher and Administrator Candidates
Our district has worked tirelessly with community members in recent years to develop a culture that encourages and supports increasing the number of people of color hired into teaching and administrative positions. We recognize that the richness of our curriculum and quality of our teaching depends on our ability to achieve this kind of diversity in our district workforce. We could use your assistance in identifying candidates of color and/or potential candidates who can help us continue to improve upon diversity within our curriculum.
We are committed to supporting our new teachers and administrators, who have worked alongside the many experienced coaches, mentors, and colleagues who have helped connect them with the greater community in Burlington. Given the size of the state of Vermont, one can easily become part of an involved community, focused on legislative policy and progressive changes that affect our communities. Our district works actively with a multi-ethnic group of parents and community members committed to increasing the representation of people of color in the school's workforce, and are fully prepared to help new members of our community develop networks and supports.
Burlington is a dynamic and hospitable city for families of many ethnicities, coming from more than 60 countries. It has been voted one of the country’s most livable small cities according to numerous lists and rankings. The city hosts a rich array of cultural events and attractions, including the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, the Vermont Mozart Festival, Gospel Festival, The Shelburne Museum, the Vermont Reggae Festival, and the Vermont Latino Festival. Burlington hosts a number of excellent restaurants serving a variety of cuisines including French, Mexican, Vietnamese, Brazilian, Thai, and soul food to name a few. Spiritual options include churches ranging from Baptist to Episcopalian, synagogues, mosques, Buddhist centers, and a Friends Meeting Hall.
Among the many colleges and universities within our geographical area, we host the University of Vermont which provides a vibrant intellectual life. Each year, UVM brings to the area outstanding individuals of international distinction in the arts and humanities, sciences, social sciences and applied fields. We partner with the University of Vermont, Champlain College, St. Michael's College and other area institutions within our schools. Advanced educational degrees are easily accessed at the many area colleges.
Burlington has an international airport, and is in close proximity to a number of large cities, including Montreal (90 minutes away by car), Boston (45 minutes by air), and New York City (one hour by air). With our excellent schools system, parks and Lake Champlain, and local ski mountains within an hour’s drive, it is not surprising that Burlington routinely finds itself on the “best places in the country to raise children” lists.
We would be glad to answer any questions you might have about our district and the community. Contact us today with your questions, ideas, and possible candidates for positions!

The Mission of the Equity Council is to provide leadership to the school district’s systemic efforts to recruit, hire, and retain diverse, culturally competent staff.
The Equity Council is co-chaired by the District Equity Officer for Employment and Retention and the Director of Operations. Membership includes exactly one representative from each district school/learning center as well as relevant (cocurricular or auxiliary program/department) staff functional areas; ideally, this individual is experienced in and/or maintains the employment hiring and supervisory authority at their school/learning center or functional area. Additional at-large members to the Equity Council include the Director of Human Resources, Diversity & Equity Office representative, invited community members/parents, and others as appointed by the Superintendent. The Equity Council is a function of the Equity Office of Employment and Retention, which reports directly to the Superintendent of Burlington Schools.

Equity Office for Employment and Retention Established in 2010
Supported by a Board-approved statement on our Commitment to Diversity & Equity, the Burlington School District restructured its central administration to create the Equity Office for Employment and Retention. Existing resources have been reallocated to fund the operations and additional staffing needed to implement the district’s efforts to diversify our workforce—one that is more reflective of the increasingly diverse student population. The Burlington School District is home to about 25% students of color and multiracial students, and there are more than 50 languages and dialects spoken. More than 60 countries are represented among our racially/ethnically diverse students.
As of the 2000 Census, people of color comprised 9% of the population of Burlington, Vermont. With a continued expansion of our community of color, it is expected the 2010 Census will find as much as 15% of the city’s population is comprised of people of color.
Dr. Dan Balón has been appointed Equity Officer for Employment and Retention to lead this new office, effective January 1, 2010. He also remains in his role as the district-wide Director of Diversity & Equity and oversees the Diversity & Equity Office.

Community Offers Input to District Recruiting Efforts
On Friday, February 12, 2010, the Burlington School District’s Equity Office for Employment and Retention—with the Department of Human Resources, Diversity & Equity Office, and Superintendent’s Office—met with members from several key local and state-wide organizations and communities. Invited groups included: Burlington Police Department; Consortium for Inclusion & Equity; Diversity Action Network; Diversity Now: Parents and Neighbors for Diversity in Burlington Schools; Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center; Multicultural Alliance for Democracy; Services Rendered; SISTA United Alliance; Social Equity Investment Project (City of Burlington); Uncommon Alliance; Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity; VT Teacher Diversity Scholarship Program; and the VT Teacher Diversity Initiative. Participants learned about the extensive network and outreach efforts being developed across the city, regionally, and nationally led by the Equity Office for Employment and Retention.
At the meeting, our community partners also met with the managing partners of the Consortium for Inclusion & Equity (CIE), a consultancy organization with experience in helping educational organizations develop and coordinate systemic affirmative recruiting and hiring/selection efforts. Very soon, the District will be posting a number of teacher positions available at all levels.
If you have any updates, suggestions, or feedback about furthering our outreach and effectiveness, please do not hesitate to contact Dan Balón at dbalon@bsdvt.org or 802-864-8494.
