The efforts of many people in the District and community support students in achieving vital outcomes such as increased academic performance, increased leadership and social skills, increased cultural and global awareness and the cultivation of a belief that they can make a difference in their community and world. Expanded learning opportunities are a key strategy in closing the achievement gap, help to keep students safe, prepare students for college and careers by building 21st Century skills and support working families.
AFTERSCHOOL programs encompass academic, enrichment and recreational offerings and is offered at all nine BSD schools (K-12), with supper and snack served daily. On any given school day, 550 or more Burlington students participate in an expanded learning activity, with over 1,700 participating annually.
Over the SUMMER, approximately 500 elementary and middle school students, most at risk of falling behind, gain critical reading and math skills through free, high-quality academic programming and theme-based enrichment activities and field trips. Afterschool is provided, as well as transportation, breakfast, lunch and supper.
