How can you find out what is happening in Burlington School District (BSD)? Pick up a copy of BSD’s Annual Report, available online or in hard copy at both Fletcher Free Library locations, City Hall, the Old North End Community Center, the Miller Center, DPW, Burlington Electric, and at BSD’s Central Offices (150 Colchester Ave.). A one-page budget document explaining tax implications is also available online and in the District offices.
As Town Meeting Day approaches, BSD is spreading the word about the school district’s successes, work ahead, and proposed budget.
“Our goal is to ensure voters have all the information they need to make an informed decision,” said BSD Superintendent Tom Flanagan. “This year’s Annual Report provides a great summary of the work happening in our District. It covers important information about our Strategic Plan, as well as student demographics, graduation rates, and successes. It also takes a deep dive into this year’s budget, and explains how the School Board and District leaders worked together to put forward a budget that meets students’ needs while keeping the tax impact as low as possible.”
Flanagan noted that this year’s tax impact is expected to be about 4.7%. This estimate factors in the Governor’s stated desire to use at least $75 million of the state’s money to help reduce tax rates across Vermont.
In addition to tax information, the report highlights student, staff, and School District achievements. Among other accomplishments, last year, four BSD students were named Vermont presidential scholars, Champlain custodian Sam Jackson was named Facilities Person of the Year, and the BHS Ethics Bowl Team was named New England champions. It is clear that BSD is making strides to ensure that every learner is challenged, empowered, and engaged.
