On Thursday, November 6th, a special board meeting was held (video on our Facebook page) to discuss the in-person learning options for the short and long-term future of BHS and BTC. This was followed up by an additional update at the November 10th regularly board meeting (also available on our Facebook page). Please find a recap of the updates below, as well as supporting documents from both meetings.
Short-term Update – Superintendent Flanagan shared that the administration is working to provide in-person learning for BHS students at the Edmunds Campus on Wednesdays. He also noted that the District has had fruitful conversations with UVM about using their facilities instead of Edmunds beginning December 1st. The results of the BHS/BTC Short and Long-term In-person Learning survey were also discussed.
Long-term – BSD has two options to get BHS students back to in-person learning in early second semester; both plans have significant costs associated.
Option A – Macy’s Occupancy
- Timeline: February
- Fit-Up: $3.5 million
- Rent (total for 2.5 years): $2.5-3.5 million
- Total: $6-7 million
Option B – Temporary Trailer Rentals Occupancy (on BHS Baseball field)
- Timeline: Unclear
- Fit-Up: $3-6 million
- Rent (total for 2.5 years): $4.9 million
- Total: $8-11 million
The Board authorized Superintendent Flanagan to enter into negotiations, pursuing both options with a plan to bring forward a recommendation to the board as soon as possible. On November 10, Superintendent Flanagan noted that costs for Macy’s seemed to be increasing at that the team was beginning to favor modular trailers as the answer to provide in-person learning.
